The winter egg famine

When you have your own egg supply , you  end up trying to match the supply to the demand (not too many, not too much). It’s not something you think about when you live in a town -you just go to the supermarket

We have six chickens which on average give us a good supply of eggs for a family of four.

That ‘average’ can fluctuate wildly..
Typically, chickens moult in autumn and grow new feathers for about a month, there are no eggs while this is happening.
Winter means colder weather, so they tend to spend their energy keeping warm, rather than making eggs.

We had several months with no eggs at all, now we are getting around 4 eggs a day.

  1. My daughter has 6 chickens and 2 roosters. She had 24 but the predators got them. They lay 4 to 6 eggs a day in the summer and 2 to 3 in the winter. Eggs are the perfect food. 🐓🥚🐔🥚😋
