Wanaka is in the south of the south island of NZ.
I’ve been to Wanaka a few times over the years. The first time was a flying visit in 1985 on a motorcycle when I was 19…ish.
I didn’t stay long then, but it did have a good vibe to it, like some out of the way smaller places do.
The big attraction in Wanaka is the local ski fields which have a longer season that the ones in the north island, which is one reason why I’ve been here a few times before .
If the weather happens to turn to crap, which closes the ski feilds, you can always visit the other attractions in the area, like the car and plane musuem, plus there’s archery, skeet shooting, and lots of other cool stuff to do.
Wanaka has changed over the years as you would expect, but it still has that magical vibe to it, even if you are now sharing that vibe with lots of other people.. (it’s got real touristy and crowded over the years).
We stayed at the local YHA which had the usual mix of young international tourists as they always seem to have, which made for a pleasant, positive experience.
Wanaka now feels a bit pleasantly woke, almost like you are on the ‘The truman show’
Of note was the Millennium walkway next to the lake, which displays a timeline of historic events. It’s been ‘revised’ since I was here last.
Out went Galileo, the Arabs discovering mathematics (algebra in the tenth century) , and the first known written languages (China, Egypt, Mesopotamia).
In came vague guess’s about when the Maori’s may have done some stuff.

It’s all conjecture because the Maori had no written language, only stories passed down through the generations.
I guess actual achievements aren’t that important anymore..

It appears that if you want to know about actual achievements, you’ll have to do your own research. And not all of it from Wiki, which is also woke.
