Our new house -when things go bang!

My family had a rather rude awakening one morning, when there was a massive bang with a flash of light, and then nothing worked in the house anymore..

It seems that one of the top power lines (11,000 Volts) hit one of the lower ones (230 Volts to our house)

It took the power company all day to repair this after they sent us over a dozen email messages, and arranged a lot of road cones (initially in the wrong place) , as is the norm these days.

Eventually, near the end of their working day they tell us we need an Electrician to check the house before they will reconnect us.

Well.. tradesman are hard to find, especially at a moments notice at the end of a working day, so that set us up for a night with no electricity or running water.

Fortunately for us, I’m a bit of a closet doomsday prepper, so we promptly pulled out our backup generator and plugged the TV in, which made for happy kids.

The damage list so far, includes the washing machine, dryer, the water pump and several plug in surge divertors.

These surge diverters died, so that our appliances could live…

It took several days to get us back up and running.

P.S.

Expensive surge divertors died while saving the appliance

Cheap surge divertors saved only themselves…..

  1. Dang. Sorry you had to go through all that. But it’s nice to know that the more expensive surge diverters (we call them “suppressors” in the USA), saved your appliances. That’s something I’ll keep in mind.
