Religion, and my newfound respect for it

I’ve never been religious, at best I am a libertarian agnostic -if you believe in god thats your choice, just dont aggressively push it on me.

The covid years in NZ have been challenging and sometimes it felt like we were very much alone as we were constantly discriminated against (eg, been barred from cafes, libraries, gym, jobs, etc)

A notable thing is that the majority of our newfound friends who stood with us as we stood up against the covid hysteria/scamdemic are quietly religious.

I don’t why it’s taken me so long to realise this!

These people were well grounded in a time of covid hysteria, when radio and TV were constantly telling us the ‘sky is falling’, and get vaccinated or else…

It’s also notable that overtly religious people are a turn off, and attract negative attention from NZ media in particular.

An example is Brian Tamaki who was indirectly responsible for many of the anti-mandate protests. He is very much a polarising figure in NZ.

(I’ve written about him before)  https://uncoffined.com/2022/04/27/a-tribute-to-brian-tamaki-and-the-freedom-rights-coalition/

So I have a new respect for religion, – it’s timeless and faithfully holds onto a set of values, even if at times they seem hopelessly ancient and redundant.

There’s still a lot of turmoil out there which creates anxiety and potentially hysteria (again).

In NZ for example, there’s a new ’cause’ every other week in the media
eg,  Gender fluid theory, Ukraine/ Russia war, Orange man bad (Trump), Israel/ Palistine etc, etc.

Most of these issues have nothing to do with NZ whatsoever.

Religion, and/or a solid set of beliefs and values is a good solid anchor to hold onto, when so many people are swept around by the whims of the moment.
