Climbing Paratutu rock

Near the end of the Coastal walk in New Plymouth is Paratutu rock -it’s the remains of a very old volcano.

Paratutu Rock -153 Mtrs tall

Over thousands of years a series of volcano’s has slowly moved eastwards along a fault line..

I had mentioned climbing Paratutu rock the day before, but the kids weren’t keen ( The seed was planted though, as so often happens with them).
So they were all fired up to climb it first thing the next day.

And so we did..

The kids started off with a rush as they always do, thinking they were much higher up than we actually were, and it was going to be ‘easy’.

You can probably guess what happened -they quickly got tired and I breezed (or is that wheezed) past them until I got to the the very steep rocky section.
The kids were happy for me to take the lead so they had an idea of how to tackle the climb.

It’s a steep climb to be sure, but it’s just a matter taking your time and methodically thinking ahead.

I spent some time on the top before the kids arrived. (In fact I wasn’t even gasping like a fish out of water by the time they arrived.)

The view at the top was worth it..

Thats Mt Taranaki in the distance with the Poukai ranges, then the Kaitaki ranges. They are all extinct volcano’s. (we think)

Climbing down presented the same challenges to the kids and I lead the way again.
