Omicron sweeps New Zealand

Omicron is all the rage in New Zealand with the number of cases in the tens of thousands
This has led to a few interesting observations during the week.

96% of the population are vaccinated, mostly with Pfizer. It obviously doesn’t do much at all to stop the spread.

The requirement for 24 days of self isolation got reduced to 10 days, but this hasn’t stopped supermarkets running low on stock.

They have now since reduced the self isolation time again, down to 7 days.
Also, Hospitals have been running out of staff, so they have started letting ‘mostly healthy’ staff work again.

(lets not forget that they laid off 1300 staff for not getting vaccinated in back in December, who may have been useful about now)

Meanwhile the Government and Fonterra (NZ’s largest company) are now back pedalling over forcing people out of their jobs.

This is partly because the Goverment lost a case in the High court last week.

On a personal note, I had covid last week. I spent a night talking to ‘Ralph’ on the great white telephone, and it only took a few days to get over it. For the record, I’m a healthy 55 yr old.

  1. Imagine that! Same thing happened here. I have a feeling it’s a case of politicians listening to over-enthusiastic scientists and making a mess of things because they’re ignoramuses.
